Hair Transplant Options for Different Hair Types at My Hair UK Liverpool
Hair types differ widely between individuals, and this matters significantly when it comes to planning a hair transplant. At our Liverpool hair transplant clinic, we use Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) surgery to treat all hair types, adjusting our approach based on your hair’s unique properties. As a doctor, I’ve seen how understanding the anatomical differences in follicle structure and scalp condition can lead to better, safer results. Whether your hair is straight, wavy, curly, or tightly coiled, our technique must reflect its biological behaviour beneath the surface.
FUE involves extracting individual follicular units with a micro-punch and implanting them in areas where hair has thinned or receded. This allows us to work with precision, especially in patients with complex hair types. For example, tightly coiled afro-textured hair requires great care. The follicles often follow a curved path under the skin. If a standard straight punch is used, it may sever the graft during extraction, lowering the survival rate. Studies have shown that custom curved punches or modified techniques reduce the transection rate in such cases.
Straight Asian hair, by contrast, presents its own challenge. The follicles are thicker and more rigid. They grow more perpendicular to the scalp, which can make them more noticeable post-implantation if not placed at the correct angle. Western European hair is typically fine and may appear thin even when density is adequate. With this type, we may need to implant more grafts per square centimetre to achieve the desired cosmetic effect.
Hair texture also affects visual density. Curly or afro hair tends to give more apparent fullness with fewer grafts due to the way the hair coils. In contrast, patients with fine, straight hair may need more grafts to cover the same area. This is why transplant planning at My Hair UK Liverpool is based on a detailed medical and surgical assessment, not a one-size-fits-all chart.
Transplant prices at our clinic reflect the amount of work involved rather than the hair type. A 1,000 graft procedure costs £2,899, while a larger 3,000 graft session costs £4,499. Many of our patients fall within the 1,500 to 2,500 graft range, suitable for early-to-moderate hairline recession or mid-scalp thinning. If your hair is particularly fine or you’re aiming for higher density, a higher graft count may be recommended.
Before booking any surgery, we strongly advise you to visit your GP for a routine health check. It’s important to make sure your blood pressure is controlled, your thyroid function is normal, and you’re not anaemic or on medications that might affect healing. In Liverpool, several NHS surgeries can support you with this:
- Westmoreland GP Centre, located at Aintree University Hospital, Fazakerley, Liverpool L9 7AL
- Park Street Surgery, 61 Park St, Bootle L20 3DF
- Mere Lane Group Practice, 51 Mere Ln, Liverpool L5 0QW
Some patients present to us without a clear diagnosis. For example, diffuse thinning could be caused by telogen effluvium or chronic illness, not just male or female pattern baldness. Others may have scarring alopecia, which requires medical treatment before surgery. This is why the GP’s role is essential—it allows us to rule out systemic issues before we intervene surgically.
Hair transplants in patients with traction alopecia are becoming more common, especially among women who have used tight braids or chemical relaxers. While surgery can work well, the donor area must be healthy. Long-term hair styling habits must also change or the problem will return. We’ve had good success in Liverpool with patients from diverse backgrounds when we’ve combined FUE with good post-op care and lifestyle changes.
At My Hair UK, our approach to diverse hair types is based on skill, anatomical knowledge, and close attention to individual variation. Every patient we see in Liverpool receives a treatment plan tailored not just to their pattern of hair loss, but to their hair’s biology. We do not rely on standardised formulas or fixed techniques, because they don’t work equally well across all hair types.
